Skincare Myths That Could Ruin Your Skin?
There are several skincare myths a lot of people blindly believe in that are actually harmful for the skin. I see a lot of these on Quora and other sites… I’ll share the ones that seem to be the most common.
Skincare myth #1: Your skin needs to breath.
Truth: Nope! Your skin does not breath, ever. It does not need to be left bare so it can get some air. If you don't put on a moisturizer or other products you need because you think you need to “let your skin breath” you are not doing your skin any favor. Quite the opposite. I put this first because it's probably the most popular myth out there.
Skincare myth #2: Chemical skincare is dangerous for your skin. You should only use natural products.
Truth: Truly natural skincare does not exist. A skincare product can have ingredients that are naturally derived, but that's about it. It cannot be entirely natural. All ingredients undergo chemical processing, otherwise they wouldn't exist, so all skincare products are “chemical”.
Also, natural does not automatically mean “good” and chemical does not automatically mean “bad”. Some of the most powerful poisons are inside fungi or plants. Please don't obsess over everything being natural and just give your skin the active ingredients it needs.
Skincare myth #3: Homemade recipes are safer and more effective than commercial skincare products.
Truth: Commercial skincare products are safer and waaay more effective. I see a lot of homemade recipes that include lemon juice. Lemon juice could actually permanently damage your skin! Its pH is not compatible with the one of your skin and you should not put it on your face, ever.
Conversely, commercial skincare is formulated by professional formulators in a way that will respect your skins pH. People used homemade recipes because nothing else was available in the past… Now that we have much better options, why risk using something potentially dangerous or ineffective?
I might add more of these later. Hopefully this helped!
